In a move aimed at promoting sustainable dairy consumption and reducing plastic waste, Verka has partnered with Punjab Pollution Control Board to launch a milk vending van in Mohali. The initiative enables consumers to purchase fresh milk using their own reusable containers, helping reduce dependence on single-use plastic milk pouches.
The milk vending van was flagged off by Punjab’s Special Chief Secretary, Forest and Wildlife, Rajat Kumar Mishra, and PPCB Chairman Prof. Adarsh Pal Vig. Officials said the project is designed to encourage environmentally responsible consumer behavior while supporting the state’s efforts to reduce plastic waste generation.
Under the initiative, consumers can bring their own bottles, steel containers or other reusable vessels to purchase milk directly from the vending van. By eliminating the need for plastic packaging, the project is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste associated with daily milk consumption.
According to Verka officials, the vending van is equipped with modern dispensing systems to ensure hygienic and convenient milk distribution. The initiative also aligns with broader sustainability goals being pursued by dairy organizations across India as they seek to reduce packaging waste and improve environmental performance.
PPCB officials highlighted that plastic milk pouches contribute substantially to municipal waste streams and often pose recycling challenges. The new model offers a practical alternative by promoting reusable packaging and supporting circular economy principles.
Industry experts note that milk vending systems were once common in several markets but are now receiving renewed attention as dairy companies look for innovative ways to reduce plastic consumption and meet growing consumer demand for sustainable products.
The Mohali project is expected to serve as a pilot initiative, and its success could encourage similar deployments in other cities across Punjab. Observers believe such models can help dairy companies balance consumer convenience with environmental responsibility while contributing to India’s larger sustainability objectives.
The collaboration between Verka and PPCB demonstrates how dairy cooperatives and environmental agencies can work together to address packaging waste challenges and promote greener consumption practices in the dairy sector.
