A recent nutrition report has highlighted Swiss cheese as one of the most heart-friendly dairy products for people looking to support healthy blood pressure. According to registered dietitian Sheri Gaw, RDN, CDCES, Swiss cheese stands out because it contains significantly less sodium than many other cheeses while providing a rich source of calcium, a nutrient linked to healthy blood pressure regulation.
A 1-ounce serving of Swiss cheese contains approximately 52 mg of sodium compared with around 185 mg in the same serving of Cheddar cheese, while supplying nearly 20% of the Daily Value (DV) for calcium. Researchers also point to naturally occurring bioactive peptides, including Ile-Pro-Pro (IPP) and Val-Pro-Pro (VPP), which have shown potential antihypertensive effects in scientific studies, although experts note that more clinical research is needed to confirm their impact in everyday diets.
Nutrition experts emphasize that Swiss cheese should be consumed as part of an overall heart-healthy eating pattern that includes limiting sodium intake, maintaining a balanced diet and regular physical activity, rather than being viewed as a standalone solution for managing blood pressure.
