Japanese beverage giant Asahi Group Holdings has announced its entry into India’s non-alcoholic, non-carbonated beverage market through the launch of its iconic CALPIS dairy-based drink in partnership with Varun Beverages Limited (VBL). The strategic alliance marks Asahi’s first move into India’s rapidly growing beverage sector, with CALPIS scheduled to launch in the second half of 2026 or later in two variants—Original and Mango.
Under the agreement, Asahi will oversee product development, technical support, marketing, and brand management, while VBL will handle manufacturing, distribution, and sales across India through its extensive nationwide network. CALPIS, a fermented dairy-based beverage first introduced in Japan in 1919, is made using a proprietary two-stage fermentation process involving skimmed milk and specialized lactic acid bacteria.
The brand is currently sold in more than 10 countries and regions, primarily across Asia and North America. Asahi said the partnership aims to leverage India’s strong growth potential in the beverage sector, while VBL views the collaboration as an opportunity to expand into new high-potential beverage categories beyond its existing portfolio. Industry observers note that the launch could introduce a new premium dairy beverage segment in India, reflecting growing consumer interest in functional, fermented, and value-added dairy products.
