The Tamil Nadu Milk Producers’ Welfare Association has urged the State government to increase the milk procurement price to ₹50 per litre for cow’s milk, citing mounting production costs and the need to ensure sustainable incomes for dairy farmers.
The demand was raised during the association’s state executive committee meeting, where members highlighted that rising expenses on cattle feed, fodder, labour, veterinary care and livestock maintenance have significantly increased the cost of milk production, while procurement prices have remained largely unchanged.
Farmer representatives argued that the existing procurement rates are no longer sufficient to support dairy farming and warned that continued financial pressure could discourage milk production and affect rural livelihoods.
The association also called on the government to strengthen the cooperative dairy sector, improve financial support for village-level milk cooperative societies and implement measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of dairy farming in Tamil Nadu. The renewed appeal comes amid growing concerns over rising input costs and follows earlier demands by dairy farmers for a revision in procurement prices to better reflect current production expenses.
