The Rajasthan Cooperative Dairy Federation (RCDF) has told the Rajasthan High Court that nearly 80% of the State’s marketable milk is handled by the unorganised sector, amid a suo motu hearing on food adulteration and misleading food claims. RCDF stated in its affidavit that Rajasthan produces around 36–37 million tonnes of milk annually, equivalent to nearly 1,000 lakh litres a day.
Of this, approximately 500 lakh litres a day is consumed at the household level, leaving around 500 lakh litres as marketable surplus. Of that surplus, nearly 400 lakh litres a day is handled by the unorganised sector, including local vendors, loose-milk sellers, small private dairies and neighbourhood distribution networks, while the organised sector markets around 100 lakh litres a day.
RCDF itself collects and processes approximately 40–45 lakh litres daily. The federation clarified that its operational remit is limited to the organised dairy sector and that it does not control Rajasthan’s entire milk market. The affidavit was filed by Additional Advocate General Mahi Yadav before a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sanjiv Prakash Sharma and Justice Pramil Kumar Mathur, while Advocate General Rajendra Prasad sought additional time to file a separate affidavit on behalf of the Department of Animal Husbandry.
