Nepal’s Minister for Agriculture, Forests and Environment, Gita Chaudhary, has called for a major restructuring of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), emphasizing the need to transform it into a more effective and results-oriented institution capable of driving growth across the country’s dairy sector. Assuming office as Chairperson of the Board on June 9, 2026, Chaudhary pledged to strengthen the dairy industry in line with the Board’s mandate through close collaboration with farmers, cooperatives, private dairy companies and other stakeholders.

The minister acknowledged the NDDB’s critical role in supporting dairy farmers, cooperatives and private sector participants but expressed concern that the institution’s relevance has been questioned at times due to its inability to consistently deliver effective results. She instructed board officials and employees to become more accountable and proactive in advancing the overall development of Nepal’s dairy industry.

Chaudhary also directed the Board to focus on increasing milk production, improving market management and safeguarding farmers’ interests. The NDDB’s primary responsibility is to provide policy recommendations to the government for the development and promotion of the dairy sector. The Board is additionally mandated to support dairy production, consumption, quality improvement, market management, import substitution and export promotion.

The announcement comes at a time when Nepal’s dairy sector is facing multiple challenges related to market efficiency, quality management and farmer profitability. Industry observers believe that a stronger and more accountable NDDB could play a key role in improving sector governance, enhancing competitiveness and creating sustainable growth opportunities for dairy farmers and processors across the country.
