An NDTV investigation at a Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) testing laboratory has revealed how detergent is being used to manufacture synthetic milk, highlighting the scale of the state’s ongoing milk adulteration crackdown. According to officials, adulterators mix water, urea and other low-cost chemicals with detergent to replicate the appearance, texture and froth of genuine milk, making visual detection extremely difficult.
tests demonstrated that detergent contamination can be scientifically identified, while investigators linked the practice to the recently uncovered synthetic milk racket in Dharashiv district, where authorities suspect more than 2.3 crore litres of adulterated milk entered the supply chain over the past six months.
The probe found that low-grade milk powder, palm oil and other additives were also allegedly used to manipulate milk composition and fat content. Food safety experts warned that consumption of such adulterated milk poses significant public health risks, reinforcing the need for stronger surveillance, scientific testing, strict enforcement and greater consumer awareness to safeguard the dairy supply chain.
