Thousands of dairy farmers and milk producers staged a large-scale protest in Ramanagara, Karnataka, by spilling milk on the road to press for an increase in milk procurement prices and stronger government support for the dairy sector.

The demonstrators said rising costs of cattle feed, fodder, labour, veterinary care and overall livestock maintenance have significantly increased the cost of milk production, while procurement prices have failed to keep pace, putting severe financial pressure on dairy farmers. Protesters urged the Karnataka government to revise procurement prices, implement measures to safeguard dairy farmers’ livelihoods and ensure the long-term sustainability of milk production in the state.

The unique protest highlighted growing dissatisfaction among milk producers over shrinking profit margins despite continued growth in input costs and reflects broader concerns affecting dairy farmers across India. Industry observers note that sustained pressure on farm economics could impact milk production and rural incomes if procurement pricing and policy support are not aligned with rising production expenses.
