Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru have developed a breakthrough recycling technology that converts discarded multilayer milk pouches into high-value engineering-grade plastic, offering a sustainable solution to one of India’s most challenging plastic waste streams. Unlike conventional recycling methods that struggle with multilayer packaging, the new process transforms waste milk pouches into durable engineering plastic that can be recycled multiple times without losing its mechanical strength, significantly improving material circularity.

The innovation has the potential to reduce plastic waste sent to landfills while creating value-added raw materials for manufacturing applications such as automotive components, consumer products and industrial goods. Researchers believe the technology could play a major role in strengthening India’s circular economy by improving the recyclability of flexible plastic packaging and reducing environmental pollution from post-consumer dairy packaging.
