The Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (HP Milkfed) has defended its decision to cap milk procurement at 20 litres per dairy producer per day, stating that the move is intended to extend the benefits of the state’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) programme to a larger number of dairy farmers, particularly small and marginal producers.

The federation said the policy aims to bring more dairy farmers into the cooperative network, increase registrations, and create additional income opportunities for rural households. According to Milkfed, the objective is to ensure that MSP benefits are not concentrated among a limited number of high-volume suppliers but are distributed more broadly across rural communities.

The decision comes amid criticism from some stakeholders, while the federation maintains that the measure is designed to strengthen farmer participation in the cooperative sector and improve the economic condition of dairy-dependent families across the state. (The Tribune)
