Amul Managing Director Jayen Mehta has highlighted the vast growth potential of India’s dairy sector, stressing that the industry must balance premiumisation with affordability while accelerating the formalisation of the dairy market. Speaking during an ET programme on “The New India Blueprint: Cities, Consumers, and the Business of Aspiration,” Mehta said the shift towards premium dairy products is already underway, but the industry must also focus on consumers at the bottom of the pyramid.

A major opportunity, he noted, lies in moving consumers from loose milk and dairy products to packaged and branded formats. Even a 5% annual shift from loose to packaged and branded dairy could bring around 3.5 crore litres of milk per day into the formal sector. Mehta also highlighted growing consumer interest in protein, wellness and integrated nutrition solutions, pointing to significant opportunities for value-added dairy products.

Emphasising the scale of India’s dairy opportunity, he said the country could support “one Amul” being added every year, underscoring the enormous potential for further organised-sector growth. (Indian Cooperative)
