Assam has entered the international dairy market with the first-ever export consignment of Purabi Premium Ice Cream to Bhutan, marking a significant milestone for the state’s dairy sector. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma flagged off the inaugural shipment of 5,627 litres of ice cream, produced by West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd. (WAMUL) under the Purabi brand. The export was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and represents Assam’s first commercial dairy export to a foreign country.
The initiative is expected to create new market opportunities for Assam’s dairy farmers, strengthen cross-border agri-food trade with Bhutan, and enhance the global visibility of the Purabi brand. State officials described the development as an important step towards expanding Assam’s dairy value chain, increasing farmer incomes, and positioning the state as an emerging exporter of premium dairy products from Northeast India.
