Amul is set to significantly strengthen its presence in eastern India, with its upcoming mega dairy project in West Bengal expected to double milk procurement in the state while supporting thousands of dairy farmers and expanding value-added dairy production. According to GCMMF Managing Director Jayen Mehta, the cooperative currently procures around 15 lakh litres of milk per day from West Bengal and aims to increase this to 30 lakh litres per day once its new integrated dairy complex at Sankrail Food Park, Howrah, becomes operational.
The project, announced with an investment of approximately ₹700 crore, will include the world’s largest curd production plant, capable of producing around 1,000 tonnes (10 lakh kg) of curd and other cultured dairy products per day. The facility is expected to strengthen milk procurement from more than 1.25 lakh dairy farmers, including over 30,000 women milk producers, while generating around 1,000 direct employment opportunities.
Amul is also expanding its national dairy infrastructure with new projects planned across multiple states to increase processing capacity, improve value addition and strengthen the cooperative dairy network. The expansion reflects Amul’s long-term strategy of farmer-led growth, regional capacity building and increasing India’s ability to meet rising demand for value-added dairy products.
