India’s largest dairy cooperative, Amul, has increased milk prices by ₹2 per litre across key fresh milk variants effective May 14, 2026, citing rising operational and milk production costs. The latest revision marks Amul’s first milk price hike since May 2025 and is expected to impact consumers across major markets while strengthening payouts to dairy farmers. (Moneycontrol)

The revised prices apply to major variants including Amul Gold, Taaza, Buffalo Milk, Cow Milk, Slim & Trim and Tea Special. Under the new pricing structure, Amul Gold 1-litre milk has increased to ₹70 from ₹68, while Amul Taaza 1-litre milk now costs ₹57 compared to ₹55 earlier. Amul Cow Milk 500 ml has been revised to ₹30 from ₹29, while Buffalo Milk 500 ml will retail at ₹39 instead of ₹38.

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul products, stated that the price increase translates to roughly 2.5% to 3.5% per litre, remaining below the average food inflation rate. According to the cooperative, higher cattle feed prices, packaging costs, fuel expenses and rising procurement costs have significantly increased milk production expenses over the past year.

GCMMF also revealed that member unions have increased milk procurement prices paid to farmers by around ₹30 per kg of fat, representing nearly 3.7% growth compared to May 2025. The cooperative emphasized that nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers goes directly to milk producers, with the latest price revision aimed at supporting farmer welfare and sustaining milk production growth.

At the same time, Mother Dairy has also announced a ₹2 per litre price increase across key milk variants effective May 14, citing around 6% growth in farmer procurement prices over the past year. Industry experts believe the latest revisions by India’s two largest dairy players could trigger similar price hikes by regional dairy brands in the coming weeks, potentially adding further pressure on household food inflation.

India’s dairy industry has witnessed multiple rounds of milk price revisions since 2022 as rising feed, transportation, energy and packaging costs continue impacting dairy cooperatives and private processors alike. Analysts believe the latest increase highlights the growing balancing act between protecting consumer affordability and ensuring sustainable returns for dairy farmers.
