A new study published in the journal Aging suggests that a daily serving of plain probiotic yogurt, combined with dietary improvements and moderate exercise, may help slow biological aging in overweight older men.
The 12-week clinical trial involved 48 Japanese men aged 50 to 74, with half following a structured wellness program that included 100 grams of plain yogurt daily, personalized dietary counseling to reduce overeating, snacking and sugary drinks, and 30 minutes of walking or stepper exercise at least three times a week.
Researchers measured biological aging using the DunedinPACE DNA-based aging marker and found that participants in the intervention group experienced an average 2.2% reduction in the rate of biological aging, a result comparable to findings from a previous two-year U.S. calorie-restriction study.
The study also reported improvements in DNA markers associated with kidney function. However, researchers emphasized that the benefits cannot be attributed to yogurt alone, as the intervention combined probiotic yogurt, dietary changes and exercise, and noted that the findings are limited by the small sample size, short study duration and inclusion of only overweight men, highlighting the need for larger studies to confirm the results.
