In a major boost to Sikkim’s cooperative dairy sector, the Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd. has inaugurated its first-ever exclusive “Sikkim Milk” outlet at MG Marg in Gangtok, marking a key step in connecting rural dairy farmers directly with urban consumers. The outlet, located opposite Titanic Park, was inaugurated by Animal Husbandry Minister Puran Gurung in the presence of Roads & Bridges Minister N.B. Dahal, Gangtok MLA Delay Namgyal Barfungpa and other dignitaries. Built around the theme “Village to Gangtok and Farm to MG Marg,” the initiative aims to strengthen market access for local dairy farmers while offering fresh dairy products to residents and tourists.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Gurung highlighted that the Sikkim government is providing an incentive of ₹8 per litre to dairy farmers, with nearly ₹68 crore already transferred directly to rural farmers’ bank accounts. He added that the state is working toward dairy self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on imported milk products, while urging hotels and restaurants in Gangtok to prioritize locally produced Sikkim Milk products.
Sikkim Milk Union Managing Director T.B. Ghatani described the occasion as a “historic” milestone for the cooperative movement. He revealed that the Union has grown from around 2,000 farmers collecting 2,000 litres of milk daily four decades ago to a network of nearly 17,000–18,000 farmers with daily milk procurement of 60,000–70,000 litres. The cooperative now markets a wide range of products including milk, curd, paneer, ghee, chhurpi and sweets, contributing to the state’s “Organic Sikkim” identity. The MG Marg outlet is also part of Sikkim’s Statehood Golden Jubilee celebrations and reflects the growing focus on strengthening local dairy value chains in the Northeast.
