Maharashtra’s average daily milk procurement has declined by 7.51 lakh litres within a month following the state’s intensified crackdown on milk adulteration, highlighting the scale of illegal synthetic milk entering the dairy supply chain. According to the Dairy Development Department, average daily milk collection fell from 17.923 million litres in May 2026 to 17.172 million litres in June 2026, while compared with January 2026 (18.923 million litres/day), the decline has reached 1.8 million litres per day. Officials believe the sharp fall indicates that a significant quantity of adulterated milk had previously been circulating in the market.
Over the past two months, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has inspected around 360 establishments, seized 1,60,329 litres of adulterated milk worth ₹65.17 lakh, suspended 35 licences, and registered seven FIRs. Investigations found synthetic milk syndicates using skimmed milk powder, vegetable oil, detergent, shampoo, contaminated water, and urea to manufacture adulterated milk.
While the recent decline has raised concerns over supply, officials noted that Maharashtra’s daily milk procurement had increased from 13.1 million litres to 17.1 million litres over the past three years, making the sudden drop after the FDA action particularly significant.
