The future of Khammam Vijaya Dairy has come under uncertainty following reports that the Telangana government is planning to shift its operations to Warangal, raising concerns among dairy farmers, employees and industry stakeholders. Operated by the Telangana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation (TDDCF) on a 10-acre campus in Indira Nagar, Khammam, the dairy was inaugurated in November 1977 by former Chief Minister Jalagam Vengala Rao with a processing capacity of 20,000 litres of milk per day.
Nearly 50,000 dairy farmers from the erstwhile Khammam district depend on the dairy for their livelihoods, while its procurement network includes around 280 milk collection centres and six Bulk Milk Cooling (BMC) centres located at Kothagudem, Yellandu, Kamepally, Kallur, Sathupalli and Yerrupalem.
Opposition leaders and farmer organisations have expressed concerns that shifting operations could increase transportation and production costs, delay payments to milk producers, impact employment and weaken the cooperative dairy network. BJP leaders have also alleged that the dairy is being deliberately projected as a loss-making unit and raised concerns over the possible leasing of the dairy’s land, while farmer representatives have urged the government to modernise the existing facility instead of relocating it.
As of now, the Telangana government has not officially announced any decision regarding the closure or relocation of the Khammam Vijaya Dairy. (telanganatoday.com)
