The Jammu and Kashmir Dairy Farmers Association (JKDFA) has announced a ₹5 per litre increase in milk prices across the Union Territory, citing a sharp rise in production costs and growing financial pressure on dairy farmers. With the revision, the retail price of cow milk has increased from ₹60 to ₹65 per litre, while buffalo milk will now be sold at ₹75 per litre, up from ₹70 per litre. The revised rates have come into effect across both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions.

According to JKDFA, dairy farmers have been struggling with escalating costs of cattle feed, fodder, veterinary care, transportation and labour, making dairy farming increasingly unsustainable at existing milk prices. Association representatives stated that the hike was necessary to ensure farmers receive a fair return and can continue milk production without incurring losses.

The dairy body also highlighted that feed and fodder prices have witnessed substantial increases over the past few years, significantly impacting the economics of milk production. Farmers argued that while input costs have risen steadily, milk prices had not been revised proportionately, squeezing already thin margins in the sector.

Industry observers note that the latest revision reflects a broader trend seen across several states, where dairy cooperatives and farmer organizations have adjusted milk prices in response to rising production costs. The move is expected to provide some relief to dairy farmers, though consumers may face higher household expenditure on milk and dairy products.
