Jharkhand is steadily progressing towards self-sufficiency in milk production, driven by farmer-centric initiatives, infrastructure expansion and stronger support for dairy producers. On the occasion of World Milk Day, Jharkhand’s Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperation Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey said that more than 70,000 farmers are currently associated with the Jharkhand Milk Federation (JMF) and that the state is rapidly moving towards self-reliance in dairy production. The government has set a target to further strengthen the sector and expand milk procurement in the coming years.

The minister highlighted that the state government is providing an incentive of ₹5 per litre to farmers supplying milk to JMF, encouraging greater participation in dairy farming. Average milk collection in the state increased from 2.40 lakh kg per day in 2025-26 to 2.80 lakh kg per day, reflecting growing farmer confidence and a strengthening dairy ecosystem.

To support future growth, two new dairy plants are being established in Giridih and Seraikela-Kharsawan, while a modern milk powder plant and dairy product plant are coming up at Hotwar, Ranchi. These projects are expected to significantly enhance milk processing capacity, improve market access for farmers and boost dairy incomes across the state.

The state’s dairy sector has witnessed substantial progress over the past decade. Jharkhand’s annual milk production increased from 17.34 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 30.25 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, while per capita milk availability rose from 137 grams per day to 209 grams per day during the same period. Officials believe that continued investment in infrastructure, farmer incentives and cooperative development will help Jharkhand reduce dependence on milk imports from other states and emerge as a self-sufficient dairy-producing state in the near future.
