India has successfully implemented its first large-scale Pure Gir embryo transfer programme, marking a major advancement in indigenous cattle genetics and dairy productivity. The initiative, led by Leads Genetics, completed its first phase in December 2025, during which in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) was successfully carried out in 116 cows, demonstrating the scalability of advanced breeding technologies in the country.

The programme focuses on accelerating genetic improvement using high-quality Gir embryos, a breed known for superior milk yield, adaptability, and disease resistance. By leveraging embryo transfer technology, the initiative enables faster multiplication of elite genetics compared to conventional breeding methods, significantly boosting productivity potential.

This large-scale deployment represents a shift toward scientific dairy farming, with the potential to enhance milk output, improve herd quality, and strengthen farmer incomes. Industry experts note that such programmes can play a critical role in addressing India’s long-standing challenge of low per-animal productivity while supporting sustainable growth in the dairy sector.
