Maharashtra’s dairy market is set for another price increase, with Gokul and Katraj Dairy raising milk prices by ₹2 per litre from August 11, 2026, amid rising procurement and operating costs. Gokul has increased the procurement price paid to farmers by ₹1.50 per litre for buffalo milk and ₹1 per litre for cow milk, taking the procurement price of 6% fat buffalo milk to ₹55 per litre and 3.5% fat cow milk to ₹37 per litre.
Following the revision, Gokul’s one-litre buffalo milk pouch will cost ₹78 in Mumbai and Pune, while the retail price of Gokul cow milk will remain unchanged. The cooperative said the revision is intended to improve returns to milk producers while accounting for fodder availability, fluctuations in milk production and rising production costs.
Industry representatives also pointed to higher transportation and packaging expenses, with diesel prices adding to logistics costs. Sugar prices have increased by around ₹12–14 per kg to approximately ₹55 per kg, creating additional pressure on milk-based products, with prices of some dairy products potentially rising by up to 10%. Meanwhile, Katraj Dairy has also announced a ₹2-per-litre increase from August 11, following a decision taken at a meeting of the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union chaired by Gopalrao Mhaske.
The latest revisions underline the continuing challenge for dairy cooperatives to balance farmer remuneration, consumer affordability and escalating input costs, particularly ahead of the festive season when demand for milk and dairy products typically strengthens. (indianexpress.com)
