The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the retail licence of Guru Nanak Dairy in Pune following a suspected food poisoning incident linked to malai pedas sold by the establishment. The action came after members of three families from a housing society in Wadgaon Sheri reportedly developed symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, and nausea within hours of consuming the sweets distributed during a vehicle puja.
According to affected families, the pedas were the only common food item consumed by all those who fell ill. Several individuals, including children, required hospitalization and intensive care treatment. The FDA has also issued a stop-work notice to the dairy’s manufacturing facility and conducted an inspection of the unit.
Authorities have collected food samples, while police have recorded statements from victims and sent biological samples for forensic examination. FDA officials stated that further action against the manufacturer will depend on laboratory test results expected later this week. If the samples are found unsafe for human consumption, legal proceedings will be initiated under food safety regulations.
The incident has highlighted the critical importance of strict hygiene practices, quality control, and food safety monitoring in the dairy and traditional sweets sector. (The Indian Express)
