A recent LocalCircles survey reveals that while Bengaluru consumers overwhelmingly prefer branded and packaged ghee, concerns over product purity remain high amid growing awareness of food adulteration. The survey found that 89% of urban households purchase branded or packaged ghee, 22% prepare ghee at home, and 10% still buy loose or unbranded ghee from local vendors.

However, consumer confidence remains fragile, with only 38% saying they are very confident about the purity of the ghee they purchase, while 41% are only somewhat confident and 19% are not confident at all, meaning 6 in 10 consumers lack full confidence in the quality of their ghee.

Brand reputation has become the most important purchasing factor for 76% of respondents, followed by quality and purity (66%). The survey also showed that two out of three households consume less than 1 kg of ghee per month, with ghee most commonly used as a topping for rotis and parathas.

The findings come against the backdrop of recent food safety crackdowns on counterfeit and adulterated dairy products, highlighting the growing need for stronger quality assurance, regular testing and transparent supply chains to rebuild consumer trust in one of India’s most valued dairy products.
