Assam has set an ambitious target of producing 10 lakh litres of milk per day as part of a major push to strengthen the state’s dairy sector, enhance rural livelihoods and reduce dependence on milk imports from other states.

Announcing the initiative, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government is expanding support for dairy farmers through subsidies, scientific dairy farming and infrastructure development, with more than 25,000 dairy farmers set to benefit from assistance aimed at increasing productivity and incomes.

The government views dairy as a key driver of rural economic growth and household nutrition, emphasizing that stronger milk production will improve farmer prosperity while moving Assam closer to dairy self-sufficiency.

The initiative builds on the state’s ongoing investments in dairy processing, cooperative development and livestock improvement, reflecting a long-term strategy to create a more resilient and competitive dairy ecosystem. Officials believe achieving the 10 lakh litres-per-day milestone will strengthen the state’s dairy value chain, generate sustainable employment and reduce reliance on external milk supplies.
