The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is sharing India’s dairy cooperative experience with Sri Lankan dairy farmers and professionals, highlighting how India’s cooperative model can support productivity, farmer incomes and a stronger dairy value chain. NDDB Chairman Dr. Meenesh Shah interacted with participants from Sri Lanka who were attending an international training programme focused on dairy development through the cooperative business model.
The programme covered key areas of dairy-sector development, including dairy cooperatives, balanced rations, preventive animal care, ethno-veterinary practices, milk quality assurance and information technology across the dairy value chain. Discussions also focused on productivity enhancement through sex-sorted semen, advances in animal breeding, scientific feeding and animal health.
As part of the exposure programme, the Sri Lankan delegation visited NDDB initiatives at Mujkuva village, along with the Product & Process Development Laboratory, Fodder Demonstration Unit, NDDB Calf Rearing Programme and Indian Dairy Machinery Company facilities. The participants also visited Amul Dairy and the Amul Chocolate Plant, gaining first-hand exposure to India’s integrated cooperative dairy ecosystem.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to share India’s experience in building a farmer-centric, technology-supported and integrated dairy cooperative system with neighbouring countries. For Sri Lanka, the exposure provides practical insights into areas ranging from farm-level productivity and animal health to milk quality, processing and cooperative value creation.
The development is particularly significant given the continuing interest in strengthening Sri Lanka’s domestic dairy sector. NDDB has previously conducted international programmes involving participants from India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, covering cooperative governance, animal healthcare, feed and fodder management, dairy engineering, quality assurance and IT applications.
