A major food-safety raid in Mathura has exposed 1,500 kg of adulterated paneer and 3,000 litres of adulterated milk, highlighting the continuing risks of dairy adulteration during a period of high consumer demand.

According to reports from the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety Department, officials raided a cheese manufacturing unit in Kosi Kalan, Mathura, where the paneer and milk stock were found unfit for consumption and were ordered to be destroyed immediately. Nine samples—including paneer, milk and oil—were sent for laboratory testing.

The incident also underlines why milk and paneer remain vulnerable to adulteration: they are consumed widely across Indian households, while their relatively simple composition can make them targets for fraudulent practices. FSSAI has identified adulterants such as detergents, urea, starch and formalin in enforcement drives; these can pose serious health risks, including gastrointestinal complications, organ impairment and, in the case of prolonged exposure to certain chemicals such as formalin, cancer risks.

For consumers, the report highlights the importance of purchasing dairy products from FSSAI-licensed sources, checking packaging and licence details, and being cautious about unusually cheap paneer. FSSAI’s DART (Detect Adulteration with Rapid Test) programme also provides simple household checks; the article cites texture, smell and appearance checks for paneer, while milk can be checked for possible dilution and detergent adulteration using simple tests.

For the dairy industry, the Mathura case reinforces a larger message: food safety cannot depend only on testing the finished product—it requires stronger controls across sourcing, processing, hygiene, traceability and enforcement. As demand for milk and dairy products rises, sustained surveillance and reliable laboratory testing remain critical to protecting consumers and maintaining trust in the dairy sector.
