Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh is facing a worsening fodder crisis as El Niño conditions intensify, reducing rainfall and severely affecting the availability of green fodder for livestock.
The shortage has pushed up fodder prices, increasing production costs for dairy farmers in one of the State’s important milk-producing regions. Farmers have warned that continued fodder scarcity could adversely impact milk production, livestock health and rural incomes if immediate support measures are not implemented.
They have urged the government to expand fodder cultivation, improve fodder distribution, strengthen drought mitigation efforts and provide timely assistance to protect dairy farmers and their animals. The situation highlights the growing vulnerability of India’s dairy sector to climate-related disruptions and reinforces the need for long-term climate-resilient fodder management strategies to sustain milk production and farmer livelihoods.
