Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, is leading the Climate Smart Agriculture Research and Innovation Support for Dairy Value Chains in Eritrea (CSARIDE) project aimed at transforming Eritrea’s dairy sector through climate-smart and sustainable farming practices.
The EU-funded initiative, launched in 2020 with a budget of about €4 million and a duration of 52 months, focuses on improving food and nutrition security, reducing poverty, creating jobs for youth, and strengthening climate resilience while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

The project targets Eritrea’s major dairy regions — Debub, Maekel and Anseba — and works across the entire dairy value chain from farm to market. CSARIDE promotes improved dairy productivity, better milk quality, value addition, farmer training, knowledge transfer, gender-sensitive development models and stronger institutional capacity.
The initiative also supports smallholder dairy farmers, milk processors, veterinary services, dairy cooperatives and women-led agribusinesses. International partners involved in the consortium include University College Dublin, University College Cork, Finland’s LUKE, Vita and Self Help Africa, alongside Eritrean government agencies and research institutions.

According to project details, the programme aims to increase adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices, improve dairy processing and market access, and enhance the sustainability of Eritrea’s dairy industry through research, innovation and technical support. (Climate Smart Dairy Eritrea)
