A comprehensive study published in Nature examines the evolution and challenges of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in India, highlighting their transformative role in the agricultural sector, including dairy. Analyzing 64 peer-reviewed articles from 2002 to 2023, the research underscores the significance of FPOs in enhancing market access, financial inclusion, and technological adoption for small and marginal farmers.

Key findings reveal that while FPOs have been instrumental in improving agricultural marketing and promoting sustainable practices, there is a noticeable gap in areas such as institutional support, leadership development, and policy implementation. The study identifies emerging themes like women’s participation in agriculture, innovation-driven sustainability, and the technological efficiency of food supply chains.

For the dairy sector, FPOs present an opportunity to streamline supply chains, ensure fair pricing, and facilitate access to quality inputs and services. However, challenges like bureaucratic hurdles, limited access to credit, and inadequate infrastructure continue to impede their full potential.

Industry Insight:
Strengthening FPOs through targeted policy interventions and capacity-building initiatives can significantly enhance the resilience and productivity of India’s dairy sector. By addressing existing challenges, FPOs can serve as a catalyst for inclusive growth and sustainable development in dairy farming.
