The Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) is scaling up its dairy procurement operations, aiming to collect milk from all 97,000 villages across the state. The model replicates the successful Balinee Milk Producer Company, currently operational in Bundelkhand, and will empower women dairy farmers via self-help groups (SHGs). At present, 2.64 lakh women across 4,961 villages in 31 districts are collecting 7.1 lakh litres of milk daily. Around 30,000 women have attained “Lakhpati Didi” status, earning over ₹1 lakh annually through dairy activities.
The state government plans to set up critical infrastructure, including bulk milk coolers, automatic milk collection units, and quality testing equipment, to ensure efficient and hygienic milk handling. The model involves doorstep milk collection and direct digital payments to farmers, eliminating middlemen and ensuring better price realization. The initiative aims to build a decentralized but integrated rural milk economy that will feed into large cooperative and private processors.
This project is seen as a key pillar of rural economic development and women-led entrepreneurship in the dairy sector, with a strong emphasis on transparency, quality assurance, and value chain formalization.
Industry Insight:
This grassroots expansion will significantly enhance raw milk availability for processors while creating a replicable model of decentralized rural milk aggregation—critical for future private investment and cooperative competitiveness in the region.
