Asahi Group Japan has introduced ‘LIKE MILK’, the nation’s first yeast-derived, dairy-free milk alternative. Developed using proprietary yeast technology, this beverage aims to cater to consumers seeking nutritious, allergen-free options. ‘LIKE MILK’ is free from all 28 major allergens, including nuts, soy, gluten, and dairy, addressing the needs of individuals with dietary restrictions.
Nutritionally, ‘LIKE MILK’ offers comparable protein and calcium levels to traditional cow’s milk, contains 38% less fat than dairy and soy milks, and is enriched with dietary fiber and zinc. The product was developed collaboratively by teams from Asahi Group Japan, Asahi Group Foods, and Asahi Quality & Innovations, reflecting the company’s commitment to food diversity and innovation.
Launched via the crowdfunding platform Makuake on April 16, the initial sales target was set at ¥300,000. However, within the first week, sales exceeded ¥117 million (approximately £608,000), indicating strong market demand. Currently available in 200ml paper-based cartons, a 1000ml option is planned for later this year. Asahi aims for a nationwide release in 2026 and is considering expanding the product line to include items like ‘LIKE EGG’.
Industry Insight:
Asahi’s successful launch of ‘LIKE MILK’ underscores the growing consumer demand for innovative, allergen-free dairy alternatives. This development presents opportunities for dairy industry stakeholders to explore yeast-based technologies and diversify product offerings to meet evolving market preferences.
