Contrary to the usual 4-5% dip in summer milk collection, Indore’s dairy sector has remained resilient this April, maintaining a steady supply of 12-12.5 lakh litres per day. This stability is largely attributed to increased milk prices, which enabled farmers to invest in new cattle, mitigating the seasonal decline in production. The Indore Dugdh Vikreta Sangh, which manages door-to-door delivery, recently increased milk prices by ₹2 per litre from March 1, 2025, to counter rising fodder costs.

Dairy owners are optimistic about an upcoming demand surge during the wedding season, with caterers and hotels expected to significantly boost bulk purchases. The Madhya Pradesh Cooperative Dairy Federation, supported by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), is actively working to expand milk production and revive underperforming milk unions, especially in Gwalior and Jabalpur. This blend of market-driven pricing, farmer incentives, and institutional support is helping the region withstand typical summer stress.

Industry Insight:
Indore’s experience highlights the crucial link between farmer profitability and milk supply stability — a case for other cities and states to review procurement prices and strategic interventions before seasonal peaks hit.
