Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced plans to establish a large dairy processing plant in Mariani with an estimated investment of ₹200 crore, aimed at strengthening rural economic self-reliance and boosting cooperative dairy networks in the region. The announcement came during a government event in Jorhat district, where Sarma highlighted the project’s potential to enhance milk collection, support local producer societies, and expand market access for farmers.

According to the statement, milk supplies to the new plant will be sourced through cooperative societies, with government facilitation for milk procurement and market linkage — a strategy designed to uplift dairy farmers’ incomes and foster livelihood generation in rural Assam. The initiative aligns with broader state efforts to deepen value addition in agriculture and allied sectors and reduce dependence on external markets.

The project announcement was made alongside other government welfare initiatives, including programmes for women’s economic empowerment through schemes like Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA), underscoring Assam’s multi-pronged focus on rural development. Stakeholders see the proposed dairy plant as a key piece in expanding the state’s dairy value chain — from farmgate production to processing and distribution.
