The CPI(M) staged a dharna at the Vijaya Dairy milk factory in Vijayawada, opposing the Krishna District Milk Union’s decision to increase milk prices by ₹2 per litre from September 14, coinciding with Vinayaka Chavithi. Party leaders Ch. Babu Rao and Boi Satyababu led the protest, during which workers raised slogans and briefly stopped milk vehicles despite the rain.
The CPI(M) leaders said the hike would place an additional burden on poor and middle-class households already facing rising prices of essential commodities. They claimed the latest increase would impose an immediate burden of around ₹36 crore on consumers and could create an annual burden of more than ₹100 crore if prices were raised three times a year.
The protesters also alleged that the government’s decision could encourage private dairies, including Heritage, to increase their prices. They accused the government of weakening the Krishna District Milk Union and held Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and coalition representatives responsible for the price revision.
The CPI(M) demanded an immediate rollback of the hike, recalling that an earlier proposed increase had reportedly been withdrawn following party protests.
