Aavin will implement two separate missions under the Tamil Nadu Innovative Initiatives (TANII) at a total cost of ₹20 crore to improve the reproductive efficiency, growth and milk-yielding capacity of cows. The first ₹10-crore mission will select 4,000 Jersey crossbred calves from across Tamil Nadu to study ways to reduce age at puberty, accelerate conception, ensure complete growth and improve their future milk-yielding potential. The selected calves will receive required feed, deworming medicines and mineral mixtures and will be impregnated using sex-sorted semen, with the findings later shared with dairy farmers to support higher milk production.
The second ₹10-crore mission will identify 50,000 milch cows across the State facing fertility-related problems. Cows that have failed to conceive after three artificial insemination attempts or have remained unproductive for a prolonged period will receive veterinary support, feed, nutrition management and mineral supplementation, along with medical intervention to streamline their reproductive cycles and improve conception efficiency. Milk and Dairy Development Minister C. Vijayalakshmi also announced that 100 unemployed persons will be trained in artificial insemination techniques, strengthening the availability of skilled manpower for the dairy sector.
