Tamil Nadu’s state-owned dairy brand Aavin has withdrawn its revised ghee pricing order within a week of its issuance after the move came under media scrutiny, while maintaining that consumers were never charged higher retail prices.
The Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation had issued an order on July 14, effective July 15, revising the billing prices, maximum retail prices (MRPs) and wholesale dealer (WSD) margins for select ghee variants. Under the revised order, the 500 ml PET jar billing price was increased from ₹333.33 to ₹347.62, the 1-litre PET jar from ₹647.62 to ₹666.67, and the 1-litre carton from ₹638.10 to ₹657.14, along with changes to dealer and retailer commissions.
After reports of a retail price hike surfaced, the Tamil Nadu government clarified that the claims were factually incorrect, stating that Aavin continued to sell all ghee variants at the existing retail prices and that no consumer-level price increase had been implemented. The government also withdrew the revised wholesale dealer margin, restoring the previous billing prices, MRPs and dealer margin structure.
