The Amul Bengal Dairy Project has taken a major step forward with Union Home Minister Amit Shah laying the foundation stone for what will become the world’s largest curd production plant at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, West Bengal. Developed with an investment of approximately ₹700 crore, the integrated dairy complex will have the capacity to process 30 lakh litres of milk per day and produce around 1,000 tonnes (10 lakh kg) of curd and other cultured dairy products daily upon completion, making it the largest facility of its kind globally.
The project is expected to benefit more than 1.25 lakh dairy farmers, including over 30,000 women milk producers, by providing assured milk procurement, strengthening the cooperative dairy network and expanding value-added dairy processing in the state. In addition to boosting rural incomes, the facility is projected to generate around 1,000 direct jobs, while supporting the growth of West Bengal’s dairy ecosystem and enhancing market opportunities for milk producers.
The plant will place special emphasis on the production of Mishti Doi (sweet curd) alongside a wide range of other dairy products for distribution across India. The project marks a significant milestone in strengthening dairy infrastructure in eastern India and reinforces Amul’s cooperative model of farmer-led growth, value addition and rural economic development.
