The Rajasthan High Court has directed the State Government to conduct inspections of major dairy cooperatives, including Saras (RCDF), Amul, Lotus and Mother Dairy, to examine the measures they have adopted to prevent the sale of synthetic milk and other adulterated dairy products.
The direction was issued by a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice Maneesh Sharma while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and suo motu proceedings on food adulteration in the state. The Court observed that both government and private dairy cooperatives play a critical role in supplying milk to consumers and directed authorities to verify their quality-control systems and submit a formal inspection report.
The Bench also took note of studies indicating the rampant use of industrial-grade urea in animal feed, which could adversely affect milk quality, and referred to reports highlighting the deaths of more than 500 farmers linked to the unsafe use of pesticides. In addition, the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board has been directed to submit a report detailing actions taken, including the registration of FIRs, against those illegally cultivating vegetables and crops using polluted city wastewater.
The Court clarified that these directions apply to all districts across Rajasthan, not just Jaipur, and has scheduled the next hearing for August 4, 2026. (indialegallive.com)
