A Mumbai-based social media influencer has been arrested for allegedly attempting to extort money from a dairy business owner by threatening reputational damage through defamatory online content. According to police investigations, Randeep Singh Gujral, known on Instagram as “turbanmirchie” with nearly 400,000 followers, allegedly uploaded a reel on June 7 claiming that worms were found in paneer sold by a dairy shop in Mulund West and falsely stating that authorities had shut down the business.
Investigators allege the video was used to pressure the dairy owner into paying money in exchange for removing the content and receiving positive publicity. Following a complaint, Mumbai Police registered an FIR and launched an operation in which the complainant agreed to transfer ₹50,000 digitally and hand over ₹2 lakh in cash. Gujral was arrested while allegedly accepting the money.
Police sources said the accused demanded a total settlement of ₹2.85 lakh and allegedly attempted to exploit ongoing food adulteration enforcement activities to intimidate the business owner. Reports also indicate that additional individuals linked to the social media operation are under investigation, with some currently absconding.
The incident highlights growing concerns within the dairy industry regarding the misuse of social media influence, misinformation, and reputational threats against food businesses, reinforcing the need for stronger safeguards against digital extortion and false product allegations.
