A deadly multi-state listeria outbreak in the United States has prompted an expanded recall of all cheese products manufactured by Maryland-based dairy processor Clover Hill Dairy. According to U.S. health authorities, the outbreak has been linked to 9 confirmed listeria cases, 8 hospitalizations, and 1 death across multiple states. Following the investigation, Clover Hill Dairy voluntarily expanded its recall from specific ricotta products to all cheese products produced at its facility, while the Maryland Department of Health suspended the company’s dairy processing license on May 30 due to public health concerns.
The recall initially focused on soft ricotta and requesón cheeses sold between May 4 and May 30, 2026, but now includes a wide range of cheese varieties such as cheddar, Monterey Jack, pepper jack, Colby, curd, smoked cheeses, and flavored cheeses. The products were distributed in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C., with authorities warning that further distribution may have occurred through retailers and distributors. Some recalled products were also sold under brand names including KESSO, Quesos La Ricura, Izalco, De Mi Pueblo, and Rio Lindo. Consumers have been advised not to consume the products and to return them for a refund or dispose of them safely.
Health officials identified Listeria monocytogenes in cheese samples during the investigation. The bacteria can cause serious illness, particularly among pregnant women, older adults, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The FDA and CDC continue to investigate the outbreak and have warned consumers, retailers, and food-service operators not to eat, sell, or serve any recalled cheese products. The incident highlights the critical importance of food safety monitoring, pathogen testing, and rapid recall systems across the dairy industry.
