The Madhya Pradesh government has unveiled an ambitious dairy-led rural development strategy with projects worth ₹38,555 crore aimed at transforming the state into India’s “Milk Capital.” Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the government will procure the entire milk output from livestock farmers, including both cow and buffalo milk, while ensuring fair and remunerative prices to strengthen farmer incomes and encourage higher dairy participation. The initiative was announced during the State-Level Livestock and Dairy Producers Conference in Gwalior as part of a broader mission-mode expansion of the dairy sector.

The state government also announced several livestock and dairy infrastructure initiatives, including a Cattle Wellness Centre in Gwalior, a new veterinary hospital in Dabra, upgrades to veterinary health centres, and expansion of mobile veterinary “Gau-Ambulance” services. Additionally, one “Vrindavan Gram” is being developed in every block to promote dairy-based rural livelihoods and integrated cattle development. Subsidy support for dairy farmers has been expanded significantly, with cattle maintenance assistance doubled from ₹20 to ₹40 per animal and a ₹10 lakh subsidy announced for establishing dairy units with 25 cows under schemes such as the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Kamdhenu Yojana.

Madhya Pradesh has already increased daily milk collection from 9 lakh litres to 12 lakh litres and has set a long-term target of reaching 50 lakh litres per day. The state currently supports more than 5 lakh cattle through gaushalas, including the Lal Tipara Gaushala in Gwalior, which houses over 10,000 cattle while producing organic fertilizer and bio-energy from cow waste.

Alongside procurement assurance and farmer welfare, the broader dairy mission includes expansion of the Sanchi dairy network, digitization of milk procurement systems, dairy technology training for youth, and extending dairy cooperative coverage to 26,000 villages by 2029–30. Officials believe the combined focus on infrastructure, entrepreneurship, livestock welfare, and cooperative expansion could position Madhya Pradesh among India’s fastest-growing dairy economies while generating substantial rural employment.
