Mumbai: Indian artisanal cheesemaker Mausam Narang has gained global recognition after winning top honours at the Mundial do Queijo do Brasil 2026 in São Paulo, where India secured four medals—one Super Gold, two Gold, and one Silver—marking a significant milestone for the country’s emerging artisanal cheese sector.
The awards highlight the growing global acceptance of Indian specialty cheeses, even as the domestic market for artisanal cheese remains relatively small but steadily expanding.
Despite international success, the artisanal cheese segment in India is still niche, with limited accessibility and awareness compared to mass dairy products like paneer, though consumer interest is gradually rising, particularly in urban markets driven by premiumisation and evolving food preferences.
Narang’s success underscores a broader shift in India’s dairy landscape, where small-scale, high-quality cheesemakers are leveraging traditional methods and local milk varieties to create differentiated products that can compete globally.
The development signals strong potential for value-added dairy in India, as artisanal cheese producers continue to expand slowly, building both domestic demand and international credibility, positioning the segment as a future growth avenue within the country’s dairy industry.
