Retail giant Walmart has managed to keep the price of its private-label Great Value milk significantly lower than many competing brands through a vertically integrated dairy supply chain and direct control over processing. The company began opening its own milk processing facilities in 2018, allowing it to cut out intermediaries and streamline production, logistics, and distribution costs. By owning parts of the dairy supply chain and producing milk for its Great Value private label, Walmart can reduce expenses associated with third-party processors while maintaining quality standards.
The strategy supports the retailer’s long-standing “everyday low price” approach, enabling it to offer affordable dairy products even as milk prices and operating costs fluctuate across the market. The Great Value brand itself spans hundreds of grocery items and remains one of Walmart’s most widely sold private labels across multiple countries, reinforcing the retailer’s ability to leverage scale and supply-chain efficiency to keep staple foods like milk competitively priced for consumers.
