The Telangana School Education Department has proposed serving milk to students in government and local body schools from the next academic year as part of efforts to improve child nutrition. According to the proposal, students will be given 150 ml of milk three times a week, specifically on days when ragi malt is not provided as part of the breakfast programme.
Officials said the department is considering procuring Vijaya tetra milk packets from the Telangana Dairy Development Co-Operative Federation Limited, as tetra packs have a longer shelf life compared to regular milk. The scheme is planned for students studying in Classes I to XII across government schools, local body schools, Model Schools, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), and Telangana Tribal Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGWREIS) institutions.
Authorities are also examining whether the milk will be served plain with sugar or mixed with nutritional supplements such as Boost or Horlicks. In addition, the department has proposed introducing a breakfast programme for government and local body school students, with a centralised kitchen model being explored to prepare meals and transport them to schools.
