Digital transformation is increasingly powering Assam’s cooperative sector and dairy industry, enhancing efficiency, transparency and farmer empowerment across the value chain, industry observers say. While the original GuwahatiPlus opinion highlights this trend, broader developments in the region show how technology and policy are reshaping dairy cooperatives.

At the heart of this shift is how cooperatives are adopting data-driven tools and integrated platforms to modernise operations that were once paper-based and fragmented. National programmes like the Internet-based Dairy Information System (i-DIS) — now used by nearly 200 milk unions — are helping dairy cooperatives benchmark performance, monitor procurement and sales, and plan investments based on real-time analytics, transforming decision-making from intuition to insight.

In Assam’s dairy landscape, Purabi Dairy (WAMUL) illustrates this digital evolution at the local level. The cooperative has expanded its distribution network through e-commerce platforms such as Blinkit, Flipkart, BigBasket and Swiggy Instamart, enabling consumers in Guwahati and beyond to order fresh dairy products online — a major modernisation of its supply chain and market reach.

These digital integrations mirror wider efforts under programs like Advantage Assam 2.0, which have catalysed investment and scaling of dairy processing infrastructure, including ambitious plans to double milk processing capacity at Purabi Dairy’s Panjabari facility — a move expected to support thousands of local farmers and improve product availability statewide.

Beyond technology in processing and sales, digital innovations such as GIS-based milk route optimisation are reducing logistics costs and improving reliability, further linking farmers to markets and cooperatives to consumers more efficiently.

Analysts say that by embracing digital tools, Assam’s cooperative dairy system is becoming more transparent, competitive and responsive — helping smallholder farmers access better data, services and markets while strengthening the region’s status as a growing node in India’s overall dairy economy.
