The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) have launched the Resilient Dairy Alliance, a first-of-its-kind partnership aimed at strengthening climate resilience in India’s dairy sector and promoting sustainable production practices across the value chain. The alliance brings together key stakeholders from industry, civil society, and science to address emerging climate risks facing dairy producers and processors in India. (Economic Times)

The initiative focuses on integrating climate-smart practices, improving greenhouse gas mitigation, and enhancing dairy sector preparedness for climate variability. With dairy playing a central role in rural incomes and nutrition security, the alliance aims to develop actionable frameworks that help producers adopt sustainable feed strategies, efficient manure management, water-use optimisation and data-driven decision-making — all while safeguarding farmer livelihoods. Industry leaders highlighted that the dairy sector must navigate a dual mandate: meeting rising consumer demand for dairy products while reducing its environmental footprint. The alliance will work on building knowledge networks, capacity-building programmes, and pilot interventions that show how climate adaptation can coexist with productivity and profitability goals.

Of particular importance is the coalition’s role in bridging public and private action. By combining CII’s industry reach with EDF’s technical expertise in climate and environmental science, the alliance seeks to accelerate the adoption of best practices tailored to India’s diverse dairy landscapes — from smallholder farms to cooperative and private processing clusters.

Experts welcomed the initiative, noting that structured climate resilience efforts could help reduce sector vulnerability to heat stress, water scarcity and feed variability, all of which are intensifying under climate change. The alliance also aims to support data and measurement systems that can help quantify emissions and track progress toward sustainability targets, a key step toward aligning the dairy sector with India’s broader climate goals.
