At the 57th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) held in Helsinki from May 14–17, 2025, new research sponsored by The a2 Milk Company highlighted potential health benefits of A1 protein-free milk for mothers and infants.

The first study involved 25 breastfeeding mothers who consumed A1 protein-free milk. After 14 days, these mothers exhibited improved gastrointestinal outcomes and reduced markers of systemic inflammation compared to a control group consuming conventional milk. Notably, their exclusively breastfed infants also showed similar health improvements.

The second study, a real-world evidence trial over eight weeks, assessed 140 mixed-fed infants receiving both breastmilk and either A1 protein-free infant formula or conventional formula. Infants in the A1 protein-free group experienced significant improvements in gastrointestinal comfort and reduced crying episodes at weeks two and four, with benefits persisting through week eight.

Dr. Andrew Clarke, Chief Science Advisor at The a2 Milk Company, emphasized that these findings align with previous research suggesting digestive benefits of A1 protein-free milk. He noted that the studies provide new insights into the potential advantages of A1 protein-free dairy in maternal and infant health.

Industry Insight:

These findings may influence dairy producers to consider the development and promotion of A1 protein-free milk products, potentially opening new markets focused on maternal and infant health. Ongoing research and consumer education will be key to expanding this niche segment within the dairy industry.
